The Client.
The Challenges.
Every year an estimated 7 million pets enter shelters. Nearly 3 million never find homes.
We want to change that.
Overview.
The team was inspired by my own story…
Our team members started thinking about the idea when I adopted cute rescue dogs named A and B (Yes, I call them A and B!) Since then, they have become an indispensable part of our team by bringing joy and delight to everyone that he interacted.
Surprisingly, there are not many people that are aware they can adopt and save a dog from a dog shelter. A negative misconception exists about abandoned dogs having behavioural problems or other undesirable personality traits.
The current pet adoption initiatives and pet shelters are outdated and out of the loop of technology trends and applications.
The pet industry is current focused on improving health, creating quality products, valuable entertainment, and luxury services for pets. Emerging technologies such as augmented reality and virtual reality allow the opportunity to replace real animals with robots or virtual interactive pets – similar to what Tamagotchi did during the 90's. Now, a new opportunity is present in the pet industry that is suitable for a generation and society that spends most of their time staring at screens. We want to lead the market towards its very core, which is natural interaction versus artificial companionship.
Research.
As interaction designers who are passionate about the vast opportunities technology can provide in our world today, we find the digital shift in the pet industry exciting, but perhaps it is not the right approach. Before any four-legged robot can become a typical household pet, we would like to focus on the millions of dogs in need of homes and help.
To achieve that, we had done various research including the current adopting process in Canada, trends in the pet industry, AR precedents, and technology.

The User Journey Map.
We wanted to change the way people think about shelter dogs by promoting adoption and educating future pet parents, and in turn, make a significant impact on these dog’s lives.
Adoption Guide.
Guide the user through the pet adopting the process with a personality match selection which matches owners to dogs that can fit in with their home and lifestyle.
AR Navigation.
guide by cute dogs that are embedded into the real landscape which creates a mixed reality that allows the aspiring pet owner to see what kind of dogs are in the closest shelter.
Pin point where the closest shelter is.
Training for the First Pet Parent.
Provide a walkthrough of possible “firsts” as pet parent by providing training, feeding techniques, and adaptation suggestions to make the experience of a new pet the best it can be.
Donation.
Other ways to help? Donate Food, toys and other things other pet families can use.
Donate money to help shelters to run in their best capacity.
The Demo Presentation.
On April, 2018 we had a Demo Presentation for the project.

The Learning.
Depends on the country and provinces, the adoption from shelters policies vary and had to give up and narrow down the target to Toronto first.
AR is still new technology and there were many technical barriers to make the app real.
MVP version is ready but we needed more funding to develop and deepen this idea.
